Improving Science Instruction

A March 2014 paper from The Education Policy Center at Michigan State University examines the role a science museum can play in improving student achievement in science. The paper, "An Investigation of The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago’s 2012-2013 Get Re-Energized Module," by William H. Schmidt and Leland S. Cogan, cites the need to support teachers of science, especially in the elementary and middle grades.

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago has developed the Institute for Quality Science Teaching, which provides teacher professional development programs to improve teachers' capacity and confidence in science instruction. The paper examines the results of one of these programs in terms of both teacher capacity and student achievement.

An article from the April 11 issue of Education Week, "Museums Step Up as Resource for New Science Standards," describes teacher programs at museums around the country, including the Gottesman Center for Science Teaching and Learning at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
