to submit a proposal for an interactive lab in one of six curriculum areas: The
Arts, English Language Arts, Math, Science, Language other than English (LOTE),
or Social Studies. Lessons or curriculum used during the lab must be aligned to
the Common Core Learning Standards and must demonstrate inquiry through the use
of primary sources and/or other cultural resources, such as historic objects,
multimedia objects, maps, works of art, or natural resources such as plants,
soil or rocks. The presentation team must consist of at least two or more
people, each from one of the following professions; a classroom teacher, a
librarian, a teaching artist, or a cultural educator (an educator from a museum,

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City is at the forefront
of this work, where <strong>Barry Joseph</strong> is working with young people
to build video games to complement new exhibits, using Minecraft as a
springboard to science, and creating other learning opportunities that encourage
students to explore their interests.<br />

In an interview with <strong>Tom Murray</strong>, Mr. Joseph will provide his
perspective on ways learning can take place in museums and other out-of-school
places, and share how educators can both integrate museum resources into their

A March 2014 paper from The Education Policy Center at Michigan State University examines the role a science museum can play in improving student achievement in science. Schmidt and Leland S. Cogan, cites the need to support teachers of science, especially in the elementary and middle grades.</div>

The Museum of Science and Industry, Chicago has developed the Institute for Quality Science Teaching, which provides teacher professional development programs to improve teachers' capacity and confidence in science instruction. Barbara Stripling will present the keynote address at this August's conference. Stripling is Assistant Professor of Practice in the School
of Information Studies at Syracuse University. She was elected President of the
American Library Association for the 2013-14 term, with the goal to lead ALA to
build on and continue its support for transforming libraries with a special
emphasis on literacy, community engagement, and innovation practices that enable
all librarians to empower the voices of their community. She was previously president of the American Association of School Librarians.</div>

Fayetteville, Arkansas Public Schools and Director of Library Services for the
New York City Department of Education. <br />

In a busy and productive day, participants heard from Kate Gerson, Senior Fellow for Educator Engagement and The Common Core with the Regents Research Fund, a panel of educators discussing ways and means to embed cultural resources in the Common Core classroom, and a number of presenters on various topics related to the Common Core Learning Standards. WSKG videotaped portions of the conference - we'll let you know in this space when and where you can see the videos.<br />
